Letter: W
W3C
(World Wide Web Consortium). (http://www.w3.org

WAIS
(Wide Area Information Servers) -- A commercial software package that allows the indexing of huge quantities of information, and then making those indices searchable across networks such as the Internet. A prominent feature of WAIS is that the search results are ranked (scored) according to how relevant the hits are, and that subsequent searches can find more stuff like that last batch and thus refine the search process.

WAN
(Wide Area Network) -- Any internet or network that covers an area larger than a single building or campus.

WAP
WAP, which stands for the wireless application protocol, is a standardized, device-independent protocol that defines the development and operating environment for wireless telephones, pagers and handheld devices. WAP utilizes a lighter version of the TCP/IP protocol for transmission between devices.

Waste
A difficult-to-determine number, waste refers to the point at which it's no longer economically sound for a marketer to continue targeting a message at you. For example, if an advertiser is looking for direct response and you've seen or heard their ad 40 times without buying, they might want to consider spending their money on a different customer. Waste can also refer to extravagant media expenditures, like buying every ad on "Friends" for a month.

Web
See: WWW

Web Browser
The tool (program) that allows you to surf the web. You probably used your Web Browser to locate this page. The most popular Web Browsers right now are Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer.

Web Page
Every time you are on the Internet, you are looking at a Web Page. Yes that includes this page.

Web server
A program that serves up Web pages upon request

Webographics
If you're at all interested in e-biz, you'd better get serious about tracking webographics. A user's webographic profile includes platform (Mac, Unix, or Windows), browser make (IE, Netscape) and model (3.0, 4.0), and connection speed (T1, 28.8, 14.4). Each of these factors can have a dramatic effect on a user's experience, and every developer must decide whether to build a site that's accessible to everyone (meaning fancy cutting-edge doodads are out) or create something really cool that won't work unless users upgrade. We, of course, recommend the former.

Winsock application
Any program designed for use with Windows sockets

WML
Wireless markup language is used to create Web pages and applications for the very small, usually monochrome screens of wireless handheld devices. WML is compatible with the wireless application protocol. It is a specialized version of XML and it is sometimes used in conjunction with WMScript to create dynamic content.

World Wide Web
A full-color, multimedia database of information on the Internet. Like the name implies the World Wide Web is a universal mass of web pages connected together through links. Theoretically, if you clicked on every link on every web page you would eventually visit every corner of the world without ever leaving your computer chair. Of course you would also have to live until you were about a million years old and computers were antiquated technology.

WSAPI
O'Reilly Web Site and Web Site Pro

WWW
(World Wide Web) -- Frequently used (incorrectly) when referring to "The Internet", WWW has two major meanings - First, loosely used: the whole constellation of resources that can be accessed using Gopher, FTP, HTTP, telnet, USENET, WAIS and some other tools. Second, the universe of hypertext servers (HTTP servers) which are the servers that allow text, graphics, sound files, etc. to be mixed together.

WYSIWYG
WYSIWYG (pronounced "wiz-ee-wig") stands for "what you see is what you get" and refers to programs that show on a screen exactly what will appear when a document is printed. Microsoft's FrontPage and Adobe's Go Live are WYSIWYG HTML editors
