Object (dHTML)
In object-oriented programming, an object is a self-contained entity that consists of both data and manipulation procedures. Similarly, HTML 4.0 includes the element to extend HTML in order to make it more dynamic. allows an author to download external data or programs into the current page. This element can be used to gather other pieces of information, including Java applets, ActiveX controls, and possibly dHTML. The long-term goal of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) is for the element to become the only way to embed data, replacing the and elements.

Object (Javascript)
An object is a self-contained hunk of JavaScript that includes properties, other objects, and associated functions. The associated functions of an object (typically functions that describe what the object is supposed to do) are known as the object's methods. JavaScript terms such as method and object are derived from the world of object-oriented programming.

octet
Alternative term for a set of eight bits (i.e., a byte).

ODBC
(Open DataBase Connectivity) A dynamic-link library (DLL) file that Microsoft Query and Microsoft Excel can use to connect to a particular database. Each database program, such as Microsoft Access or dBASE, or database management system, such as SQL Server, requires a different driver. ODBC drivers make Microsoft Query flexible, so that you can connect to new databases, as they become available, by installing new drivers.

Ogg Vorbis
Ogg Vorbis is an open-source digital music format, similar to MP3. Unlike MP3, however, Ogg Vorbis encoders, decoders, and plug-ins are developed under the GPL (GNU Public License) and can be distributed freely. Both Winamp and Sonique, the two most popular MP3 players, support Orb Vorbis

OLE
(Object Linking and Embedding). A capability introduced with Windows 3.1 that gives all Windows applications a standard way of incorporating objects (i.e., text, graphics, or sound) created in other Windows programs. When you link an object between two documents, changes made to that object in one document automatically will be made in the other.

online
Refers to the successful connection with another computer via telephone lines or through a network.

Online
Having access to the Internet. You are online right now. Often people will say they are online meaning they have access to the Internet and have an e-mail address, but may not necessarily be connected to the Internet at that moment.

online service
A dial-up service that provides news, information, and discussion forums for users with modem-equipped PCs and the access software provided by the service. (Examples include: America Online, Prodigy, CompuServe, Genie, Delphi, and Global Network Navigator.)

Open Source
In early 1998, Netscape announced that it would release the source code of its next-generation browser as a part of its open source strategy. The source code contains the programming elements that make up the Communicator software application. It is not a compiled program and thus cannot be used by traditional software end-users. Mozilla, as it is called, was released as C++ source code and caused a flutter of excitement in part because of its implementation of the World Wide Web Consortium's standards, eXtensible markup language (XML), and the resource description Framework. (see Aurora)

Operator
An expression tells JavaScript what to do with the data it gets, and within each expression are operators and operands. Operands are the data or data types the expression gets, and operators are the shorthand characters that tell the expression what to do with the operand. JavaScript has arithmetic (+,-,*,/), assignment (=), bitwise (&, |), comparison (>, <,), logical (&, ||, !), special (., []), and string (+) operators. Operators are a feature of many programming and scripting languages. At first there were a relatively limited menu of operators to use in JavaScript, but version 1.2 allowed for the support of regular expressions and a group of operators large enough to compare to other scripting languages.

OSI
(Open Systems Interconnect) A conceptual model and set of protocols for networks, promulgated by the ISO.

Outline Font
An outline font supplies a geometrical description of each character so that the font can be rendered in a variety of sizes. Since they are scalable, outline fonts can make the most of an output device's resolution. The greater the resolution of the monitor, the sharper the characters will look. Popular languages for defining outline fonts are PostScript and TrueType.
